What is HRV, and Why It Might Be the Most Important Thing for You to Track
There’s a number your body produces every single day that most people have never heard of, and almost nobody can explain it very well.
It’s not your heart rate, blood pressure, step count, or even your VO2 max.
It’s called heart rate variability (HRV), and once I understood what it actually measures, I stopped thinking of it as a fitness metric and started thinking of it more as a direct readout of my nervous system.
This reframed how I dealt with my entire recovery.
What HRV Actually Is
Most people assume a healthy heart beats steady and consistent. Every beat arriving exactly on schedule.
That’s not how a healthy heart actually works.
A healthy heart varies slightly between beats, the gap between one heartbeat and the next is never perfectly identical. Sometimes it’s 900 milliseconds. Sometimes 940. Sometimes 870. That variation, measured in milliseconds, is your HRV.
Higher variability generally means your nervous system is adaptable, responsive, and in a state of recovery. Lower variability means it’s under strain. Whether from sickness, stress, poor sleep, overtraining, or in my case, autonomic dysfunction, it disrupts the controlling signals behind every one of those beats.
The reason HRV tells you something heart rate alone can’t is that it reflects the balance between two branches of your autonomic nervous system: the sympathetic branch (fight-or-flight, activation, stress response) and the parasympathetic branch (rest-and-digest, recovery, repair). When those two are balanced and communicating well, your HRV tends to be higher. When your body is stuck in a sympathetic state (constantly thinking it’s managing a threat), your HRV drops.
In my case of dealing with autonomic dysfunction, that number can become one of the clearest windows into what’s actually happening inside a body that often looks fine from the outside.
Why I Started Taking It Seriously
Before everything happened, I tracked HRV the way a lot of people do, casually looking at it in the morning to see an ambiguous number, if it was close to my average, great!
After my autonomic crash, I started reading it differently, not as a performance metric, but as a daily signal from my nervous system about where it actually was.
What I consistently noticed was that my HRV told me the truth before I felt it. On days when I felt cautiously okay, a low HRV score was often an indicator for a harder afternoon. On days when I was anxious about how I felt, a stable or improving trend in my HRV was a much-needed reassurance.
It gave me something to trust when I’d lost confidence in my own perception of how I was doing.
What Affects HRV (And What You Can Actually Do About It)
HRV isn’t fixed. It responds, sometimes dramatically, to the decisions you make every day. Here’s what I’ve seen move the needle, both in the research and in my own data:
Sleep quality, not just quantity. The hours between roughly midnight and 4 am are when HRV tends to reach its highest point of the night. Disrupted sleep, whether from stress, alcohol, a late meal, or environmental factors, compresses that window and consistently shows up in your metrics. A consistent bedtime matters more than most people realize.
What you eat, and when. Certain foods trigger an inflammatory response that shows up in overnight biometric data within hours. For me, high-histamine foods were a consistent HRV suppressor that I could see in the data before I could connect it. Eating late (within two to three hours of sleep) is another consistent HRV disruptor, as research clearly shows.
Stress load, including the kind you don’t feel as stress. A hard conversation, a difficult commute, a day of hard parenting or multitasking - these register in the nervous system as load even when they don’t feel dramatic. HRV integrates all of it, which is why it regularly reflects a week’s worth of accumulated stress rather than just the previous night.
Breathing patterns. Slow, controlled breathing is one of the few levers you have over your parasympathetic nervous system. This isn’t wellness speculation; it’s a well-documented mechanism. Practices like box breathing before sleep have a measurable effect on HRV, which most people can see within days with consistent practice.
Movement, dosed appropriately. Regular moderate movement improves HRV over time. But overtraining (or in my case, any exertion that went beyond my current capacity) suppresses it. As someone who went to the gym 5 days a week, one of the hardest reframes in my recovery was learning to treat movement as medicine with a dose, not a discipline to push through regardless of the signals.
How to Actually Use It
You don’t need to obsess over a single number. A single-day HRV reading in isolation tells you very little, it’s the trend over days and weeks that matters.
What I look for:
A stable or improving trend over two to three weeks tells me my recovery protocol is working. A sudden drop that persists for more than a day or two tells me something has shifted. Sometimes I know what it was, sometimes I have to look at my previous 48 hours and make a guess. A consistent low baseline tells me something systemic is happening that I need to investigate, not push through.
The goal isn’t to chase high scores. It’s a number that trends in the right direction over time, responds predictably to the decisions you make, and eventually becomes a language you learn to read.
Why This Matters If You’re Dealing With More Than Just Fitness
For most of the people writing about HRV, it’s a performance tool. A way to know whether you can push hard in the gym today or take it easy.
I think that framing misses most of the value.
For anyone navigating chronic illness, post-viral recovery, autonomic dysfunction, or just a body that isn’t behaving the way it used to, HRV is something closer to a daily check-in with your nervous system. A way to see evidence of progress on days when nothing feels like it’s moving and to validate that what you’re doing is actually working, even when the results aren’t yet visible to anyone else.
That’s what it became for me. Not a number to optimize. A language to learn
